After years of awaiting justice, families of the victims of Naroda Patiya carnage got some relief when perpetrators of the terrible manslaughter were convicted by the special court. The special court, while passing its verdict, termed the Naroda Patiya carnage as the “black chapter in the history of Indian Constitution”. The special court judge dubbed communal riots as "a cancer on constitutional secularism." The ‘kingpin’ Maya Kodnani and 30 other accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the infamous Naroda Patiya carnage, which saw brutal massacre of 97 Muslims soon after the 2002 Godhra riots.
The verdict came as a setback to the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat since Maya Kodnani was a former minister and a prominent BJP leader in the state.
