New Delhi: Filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar says he always wanted Katrina Kaif to play the bride in his recently released `Mere Brother Ki Dulhan` and he hopes that the comedy will change her diva image.
Zafar, a newcomer, has directed the film under Yash Raj Banner, and says Kaif, in a joyous and fun loving avatar is much more relatable to the audience.
"Katrina is in total contrast to what she has done in the past. This whole image of her being a Diva would change with this film because she has been presented as a next-door-girl," Zafar told reporters.
The movie also stars Imran Khan, singer Ali Zafar and follows the story of a guy who falls in love with his brother`s bride.
Zafar who has been an assistant director to movies like `Badmaash Company`, `Tashan` and `New York`, is making his directorial debut with the film.
The director says that Katrina was perfect choice for the role.
"It was when Karan Johar`s `Dostana 2` got pushed due to which Katrina`s dates opened up. Aditya Chopra (producer) asked me about who I wanted to cast in the movie. When I said Katrina, he asked me that what was in my script that would appeal to her, I said that it was a mad film and would change the way she is perceived by the audience. He was convinced an asked me to talk to her," Zafar said.
The debutant also said that he was initially skeptical if the `Singh Is Kinng` actress would agree to do the film because of her busy schedule.
"I emailed her in the night and she called me back the very next morning. She said that she really loved the role and wanted get started the moment everything was sealed along with the leading man. Imran Khan came in soon after and we were all set to get the film on floors," he added.
