Los Angeles: Hollywood actor Paul Newman has been declared the most generous celebrity of 2008, leaving behind the likes of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Mel Gibson. The `Cool Hand Luke` actor, who passed away last September, donated more money to charity than any other US star, giving a huge USD 21 million to various initiatives and campaigns, according to a list compiled by `The Giving Back Fund` for Parade magazine.
Hollywood`s `It` couple Pitt and Jolie spent an estimated USD 13.4 million on good causes including a health clinic in Ethiopia and the redevelopment of New Orleans last year. The couple also donated USD 1 million to help children caught up in the Iraq conflict, through education programmes via their Jolie-Pitt foundation. "These educational support programmes for children of conflict are the best way to help them heal," Jolie said talking about the donation. "We hope to encourage others to give to these great organisations," Pitt added. Gibson, who comes third in the list, has invested USD 6.5 million to causes including a Holy Family Church in California. Richard Childress, former NASCAR racer and Oscar De La Hoya grabbed the fourth and the sixth places in the list with donations worth USD 5 million and USD 3.5 million respectively. TV mogul Oprah Winfrey landed the sixth spot with the scholarships worth USD 2.4 million she created for kids in the hometown of her longtime partner, Stedman Graham. Bureau Report
