Gallerie Nvya recently presented ‘Swayam Siddha’, a multi-media exhibition by renowned artist Seema Kohli in the capital. The exhibition took a look at a new visual language as Seema treaded the path of self-discovery through her paintings. During the exhibition, Gallerie Nvya and Bookwise Publication together came up with ‘Swayamsiddha- Myth Mind Movement’, a book which takes you into the internal and external landscape of the artist. ‘Swayamsiddha…’, edited by art historian Dr Alka Pande, features compositions by the scholar Madhu Khanna, Janet Chawla, musician Vidya Rao, and the artist Seema Kohli herself. Although Seema has been working in different mediums for the past two decades, interestingly, the subject has always been the same. The essence of her creation and dissolution remains the same…that of ‘self-realisation’, or the ‘quest for the truth’. Starting with pen and ink drawings on paper, then moving on to photo colours, oil paints on canvas and finally mixing media on canvas, her creations have always been complemented by the initial elements that have always remained a constant. The paintings at the exhibition involved multiple layers of colours and painstaking attention to detail, rendering a mysterious element to Seema’s works. The use of reds and blues seemed very characteristic, and gold was used in a way that depicted purity and all the colours used apparently had a certain connotation attached to them. Seema Kohli’s latest exhibition was undoubtedly a pure visual extravaganza with a stellar display of paintings, installation, sculptures and film.
