Mumbai: In a shocking revelation, Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi has stated that he has been denied a home by Nibbana Cooperative Society of Pali Hill on religious grounds. The actor, who was looking forward to buy a new pad near his parents’ abode, says that the housing society is biased against his Muslim identity. The actor has recently filed a complaint against the society with the State Minority Commission and has demanded immediate action against the society members. Talking to a news daily, Abraham Mathai, the State Minority Commission vice-chairman said, "We are sending summons to the society, asking for an explanation." A visibly disturbed Emraan said, "My parents went to meet society members last week (for the NoC) along with the seller and the broker. Society members, however, told them they were busy and refused to meet them. I found it really offensive." He added, "The seller, Suvarna, has now informed us that the society will not give us an NOC and it has blocked the sale. We have information that this has been done as they are discriminating against Muslims and will not allow any Muslim in the society." However, when Mr Chatri - the secretary of housing society was enquired, he said that he did receive a letter from the Hashmis, however, no decision was immediately taken due to the unavailability of the committee chairman, "But there is no ban on Muslims; we know all Muslims are not terrorists. People from all over the country stay here -- even I have come from a different part of the country -- but one has to know who is coming in." Nevertheless, this is not the first time Emraan has faced such a setback, as the actor confirms, "I faced a similar situation in August 2007, when I was looking for a house in the same area; residents and brokers told me I would not be able to get a house because I was a Muslim. But I later managed to get one."
