Lying close to the Ganges that flows through the city, the stadium which was established back in 1945, was formerly known as Modi Stadium. Currently operated by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, the stadium was initaially home to just local cricket matches, until it was made fit to play host to an international match.

In the beginning of 1952, the first international match was played on this gound where India hosted England in the first of their five-match Test series. However, the away team snatched an eight-wicket victory over the home side.

Owing to the region's soil, the pitch fails to produce bounce and pace, making it more of a spinners' pitch. And if the batsman can somehow survive the pollution and smog of Kanpur, the pitch becomes a paradise. This is the same ground where Mohammad Azharuddin notched up a brilliant century in his debut and years later former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi produced his wizardry with the bat, scoring a ton off just 45 deliveries.

Regardless of all these fireworks, the ground has been subjected to criticism over its slung low floodlights, and it is this reason why there are fewer day-night matches held at this venue.

Fun fact - It is the only such stadium in the nation to have a students gallery and internationally it has the largest manually operated scoreboard.

In the 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), the ground will serve home to the Gujarat Lions and will host just two matches - one on May 10 against Delhi Daredevils, while the other on May 13 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
