Imphal, Aug 20: Fresh breaches in the embankments of
river Iril have led to several houses being submerged today as
hundreds of low-lying villages continued to be under water
across Manipur valley due to incessant rains which have
fuelled fears of fresh floods, official sources said.
More than 100-feet of the embankments of the river were
breached at Kshetrigao area today inundating several houses
at Chandam Leikai and surrounding areas in Imphal east
district, the sources said.
Several other places from where floods water had been drained out were submerged again by the gushing waters, they said, adding efforts were on to block the inflow by erecting bamboo walls with sand bags. Round-the-clock work was on at various places to prevent water from breached portions of embankments of different rivers, the sources said.
Authorities have received several complaints on non-receipt of relief materials from far-flung villages, where people were finding it difficult to drain out the accumulated water. Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who had visited some of the affected areas, has instructed district authorities to step up supply of relief materials, the sources added.
