Lucknow, Jan 02: Uttar Pradesh Congress today accused chief minister Mayawati of trying to "destroy the evidences” in the Babri Masjid demolition case by withdrawing security to them to "save" senior BJP leaders accused in the case.

The police personnel deployed for the security of the evidences in the case available with the special court in Lucknow have been withdrawn by the chief minister as the first step in this direction, state Congress' chief spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh alleged in a statement here.
"Before the government could succeed in its designs to destroy the evidences and save the accused, CBI should take over their safe custody," he demanded.

The government wanted to "shield the accused" as several senior leaders of the BJP, a partner in the state's ruling coalition, were among them, Singh alleged. The Congress spokesman suugested day-to-day hearing of the case in a Rae Bareli court as directed by the high court after completing legal formalities and asked the government to issue necessary directives to the CBI in this connection.

He said that 10 years have passed since the structure was pulled down in Ayodhya and successive governments since then have shown no urgency in getting the guilty punished.

The Ayodhya cell set up in the Prime Minister's office was also closed down, he added.
