Vladivostok (Russia), Jan 12: Russia will not close its border with China despite new suspected cases of the respiratory disease Sars in that country, a high-ranking official with Russia's FSB security service said early today. Russia "will take all measures necessary to keep the disease from penetrating the border," chief of the FSB's pacific border department Pavel Tarasenko told reporters.
However the border with China, which was sealed off during last year's outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or Sars, will not be closed down, Tarasenko assured, adding that medical control over the border would be boosted in the near future.
Last year some 30 countries were affected by the Sars epidemic, which infected more than 8,000 people and killed nearly 800. China was the country worst hit, accounting for a total of 349 deaths.
