Kolkata, Dec 06: The 10th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid passed off peacefully in West Bengal today amid tight security, especially in areas along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
''There is no report of any untoward incident till late in the afternoon. However, strict vigil is being maintained all over the state, especially in areas along the border,'' Deputy Inspector-General of Police (headquarters) Narayan Ghosh told a news agency. He said the alert which was sounded in the state yesterday would continue.
The Samajwadi Party took out a procession from north Kolkata to esplanade in the central part of the metropolis while the 'Babri Masjid banao committee' observed 'Black Day' today with a sit-in demonstration in Kidderpore area.
Meanwhile, Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated in the state with customary prayers and festivities.
