New Delhi, June 26: With a view to treat bio-medical waste, the Delhi government today said two common treatment facilities would be operational in next six months. Common treatment facilities at Okhla and Gazipur would be operational in another six months, director health services, Delhi government, Dr R N Baishya said here.

Stating Delhi has about 40,000 beds in its healthcare institutes which generate about 60 tonnes of bio-medical waste, Baishya said, "the two facilities would have an incinerator, microwave and autoclave each which would be made available to users from private and government sectors at a price."

On the quality of incinerators in various hospitals, director, hazardous waste management (ministry of environment and forest) Dr Narendra Hosabettu said "of the 11 hospitals which have incinerators for bio-medical waste, only one is in proper condition."

Speaking at a seminar on 'management bio-medical waste - effective solutions and practices', Hosabettu called for every healthcare institute to adhere to the well established bio-medical waste handling and treatment rules.
