Islamabad, Sept 20: The Islamist alliance Muthahida Majlis Amal (MMA) today said it would announce its stand on Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's modified constitutional amendments on September 23. The modified constitutional package approved by Musharraf and the cabinet and aimed at clinching a deal to end the 11-month old deadlock over legality of his presidency and constitutional amendments, was handed over to the MMA last night.

The Islamist alliance said that it would consider the new package at a meeting of its supreme council on Sept 23, after which it would announce its stand. MMA had initially dropped hints it was unlikely to accept the new package as Musharraf declined to budge on the contentious issue of quitting the post of chief of army and stuck to his stand that he would decide to quit the powerful post at a time of his choice.

The timing of the MMA meeting appeared to be significant for Musharraf as its decision would be announced a day before his key meeting with US President, George W Bush.

After his meeting with bush on Sep 24, Musharraf would address the UN General Assembly on the same day. As per the modified amendments, Musharraf was reluctant to set a deadline to quit as army chief but at the same time agreed in principle to cut down his powers as President and submit his legal framework or DER, (LFO), which incorporated his amendments for the approval of the Parliament.
