Imphal, Nov 10: Over 100 journalists from print and electronic media in Manipur today launched a day-long sit-in protest here against the Tamil Nadu Assembly's decision to imprison senior scribes of 'the Hindu' and 'Murasoli' dailies. Official reports said the journalists also put up placards saying "don't try to gag the press, leave the media personnel to work freely".

Terming the Tamil Nadu Assembly decision as a frontal attack on the freedom of press, Wangkhemcha Shyamjai, president of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), said AMWJU would also submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister requesting him to intervene in Tamil Nadu Assembly decision.

Shyamjai said in a trouble-torn state like Manipur, the press faced various problems apart from authorities attempting to gag the media personnel and AMWJU supported Tamil Nadu journalists in their fight against the attack on freedom of the press.
