Tokyo, July 22: Japan has resumed efforts to raise a suspected North Korean spy boat after a three-week delay due to bad weather, coast guard officials said today.
The boat, about 90 meters below the surface of the ocean, sank in a gunbattle with Japan's coast guard on Dec. 22 in the east China sea.
Tokyo suspects the vessel was a north Korean spy ship or drug-smuggling boat, and wants to determine its origin. The boat's 15 crew are presumed dead. Four bodies have been recovered. North Korea has denied links to the ship.
Two submersible craft returned to work yesterday and removed debris from around the sunken vessel, Japan coast guard spokeswoman Mina Azuma said.
Work on recovering the boat began on June 27 but has been delayed due to bad weather. Officials had initially hoped to raise the boat by the end of July, but now say it will be much later.
