The twice-delayed Emmys, usually a glittering event watched by millions on television, finally got under way US on Sunday, hitting a patriotic note from the opening rendition of ''America, the beautiful'' to early winners from White House drama, ''The West Wing.''
''The West Wing,'' one of the most nominated programs -- 18 -- swept the first three awards for best supporting actor and actress and for best director.

Its main competitor of the night, the HBO mafia drama ''The Sopranos,'' which had 22 nominations for the prime-time Emmy awards, won only one early honor for best writing in a dramatic series for robin green and Mitchell Burgess.

Early highlights included a speech by retired CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite highlighting the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, but telling the nation that life must go on and television can help in the healing process.
