Beijing, Dec 06: Ahead of premier Wen Jiabao's
first official visit to Washington, the Bush administration
has reassured China that it would adhere to the 'One China'
policy on Taiwan issue.
United States Secretary of State conveyed reiterated
Washington's adherence to the 'One China' in a telephone
conversation with Chinese foreign minister Li Zhaoxing last
evening, media reports said today.
Powell said the US would adhere to the 'One China' policy, saying that Washington had repeatedly explained to Beijing its stance on the Taiwan issue, and will stick to its stance, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
China views Taiwan as a rebel province that must be reunified with the mainland, even by force.
Powell said US President George W. Bush and the US government welcomed and were awaiting Wen's upcoming visit.
Wen will visit the United States from December 07 to 10 amid new tensions between Beijing and Taipei over the island's renewed bid to seek independence and Sino-US trade frictions.
Li exchanged views with Powell on issues concerning the Beijing six-party talks, which attempts to peacefully solve the nuclear issue in the Korean Peninsula, and other issues, the report said. Meanwhile, Xinhua, in a commentary, accused Taiwanese President Chen Shui-Bian of falsely claiming that the island is facing a "military threat" from the Chinese mainland.
"Chen Shui-Bian of Taiwan has repeatedly proposed staging a so-called "defensive referendum", which is an extremely dangerous provocation," it said.
Accusing Chen of being "incompetent" in his position, the commentary said the pro-independence minded Taiwanese leader was "addicted to power and tries to use every possible means to provoke contradiction among the people and create tensions across the Taiwan straits."
"Chen, in the interests of himself and his political party, tries to impose the views of a small number of independence activists on all Taiwan people even at the cost of putting everyone at risk. It is irresponsible, ignominious and immoral of Chen, as a politician, to do so," it said.
The commentary warned if the Taiwan authorities and separatists collaborate to seek independence, the Chinese government and people will spare no efforts to maintain national sovereignty and territorial integrity of China at any cost. Bureau Report
