Chennai, June 16: DMK president M Karunanidhi today requested Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to order an enquiry into the treatment given to Union minister Murasoli Maran at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and at the Apollo Hospital here. In a letter to Vajpayee, copies of which were released to the press today, Karunanidhi said while he appreciated the care and support given to Maran by these institutions, he had heard there were 'some lacuna' in the treatment after surgery, which could have been averted, if it had been diagnosed in time. “I have been told that Maran was discharged after surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi, with high temperature, which was not reduced subsequently. This should have been taken into medical consideration in time,” he said.
Similarly, doctors treating Maran now had revealed that the second operation to replace the heart valve at Apollo Hospital, Chennai, had ended with leakage, necessitating a third surgery to replace it. "One cannot ignore that three such consecutive surgeries in the heart will spoil the health condition of any patient and Maran is not an exception," Karunanidhi said. Bureau Report
