Kathmandu, Dec 23: Ruling out an indefinite
postponement of polls due to the Maoist insurgency, Nepalese
government said it is ready to hold elections if it gets a
recommendation from the main political parties.
The general elections are "essential for the resolution of the current political problem in a balanced manner", Minister for Education, culture and sports, Devi Prasad Ojha, said yesterday in Rupandehi district.
He said the government was ready to hold election if the big political parties make recommendation for holding it by creating an atmosphere of understanding, the state-run Gorakhpatra daily reported. Vowing that the government will not allow ultras to make elections "hostage" to the Maoist problem, the minister said the polls cannot be postponed for indefinite period as it would "further deepen" the current crisis.
