Bangladesh's former ruling Awami League urged the caretaker government of former chief justice Latifur Rahman, which ended its first week in office on Friday not to overstep its constitutional role.

"The caretaker government should work for holding neutral and fair elections and carry out day-to-day governance," S Abdul Malek, a senior Awami League leader and political advisor to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed said.
"It is not a government of reforms or deciding on any policy matters undertaken by the past government, which we think is beyond its constitutional role," he added.
Asked if the Awami League was unhappy with the caretaker government, Malek said, "We have no conflict, but there has been a misunderstanding on some grounds which we hope will be worked out." He added that we have made our concerns known to the caretaker government because if it loses its neutrality the nation will be put to jeopardy.
