New Delhi, Oct 09: The railways have decided to open up container train operation to organisations other than the Container Corporation of India (Concor). Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), and Pipawa Rail Corporation Ltd (PRCL) have, so far, shown their interests in operating container trains, an official press release said today.

Though the PRCL has been permitted, in principle, to operate container trains, a detailed proposal from the organisation was awaited, it said. According to the release, the decision to open up container train services to private parties was intended to introduce an element of competition in container train services besides meeting the challenges of emerging globalisation of Indian economy.

Railways have also taken several measures to improve user friendly services and accordingly, commodity claims cells have been set up in zonal railways to provide single window clearance in claims cases. Besides, the machinery to implement the schemes for claim enquiry and tracing on end to end basis has been toned up, it said adding that in addition claims works in zonal railways has been computerised to ensure expeditious settlement of claims.

Efforts were also on to make the system transparent through online linking to web to facilitiate the claimant to monitor claims cases from his own desk, it said.
