New Delhi, Oct 10: Theft of classified computer discs from a high security Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) office here has sent alarm bells ringing in the government circles and the case was handed over to Delhi Police's anti-terrorism and espionage wing while defence ministry initiated an internal inquiry. Considering the seriousness of the matter, government today asked Delhi Police's special cell to conduct investigations in the theft of 15 discs which are believed to contain information regarding assessment of Pakistan's nuclear and missile capabilities, police sources said here today.
The special cell has formed a team to carry out the probe and inquiry will be launched immediately, they said. The defence ministry has also launched a probe into the lapses that led to the theft even as officials insisted that nothing of "strategic nature" or anything dealing with the nuclear command had been stolen.
Only "internal data exchange and data relating to human resources and library" has been stolen in the break in discovered on Monday morning, they said. Top DRDO, defence ministry and intelligence officials visited the Metcalfe House where offices of Scientific Analysis and the Institute for System Studies and Analysis of the DRDO are located.
Sources said that security had been beefed up at the two offices.
They said of the 15 hard discs, 10 related to training purposes and the rest to internal data. Bureau Report
