ICHR to bring out publication on 1857 uprising

How was the First war of independence in 1857 perceived by the Europeans?

New Delhi, Oct 14: How was the First war of independence in 1857 perceived by the Europeans?
In its bid to present a global prospective of the historic movement, the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) will bring out a publication compiling editorials and reports published in European press, except Britain.

"We have started collecting the materials from Spain, Germany, Russia, Italy and France. These will be translated into English and published," ICHR member secretary P K Shukla said.

The materials will be part of a series of publications. "It will give an idea about how people in these European countries had viewed the uprising in India," Shukla said.

The work for the projects has already started and the first volume, for which translation is in progress, is likely to come by February next year.

The materials are being collected from different archives, libraries and museums in those countries.

The council will also publish a volume compiling the editorials on the 1857 uprising published in contemporary Urdu newspapers in India.

Besides this, the ICHR will bring out six other publications with articles from various scholars. It has already brought out the first part of rethinking 1857.

The council has also provided grants to 44 institutions and organisations, which will collect the documents on 1857 available at different police stations and archives across the country.
