A soldier and three civilians, two of them children, have been killed in heavy border shelling by Pakistan in Kashmir, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place late Monday in Palanwala sector, 75 km west of Jammu.

Police sources said Pakistani troops lobbed heavy mortars and automatic grenades on the sector through the night.

One of the mortars fell on a house, killing the two children -- aged five and six -- and an adult.

A soldier died in cross-border firing in the same sector.

Heavy firing was also reported through the night in the Poonch sector, near Jammu along the Line of Control (LoC).

While the intensity of firing by both sides across the LoC has remained more or less the same since it began last Friday, sources said shelling on the international border had lessened.
