Maoist guerrillas killed four Nepali police officers and wounded at least five others in the latest attack aimed at deposing the Himalayan kingdom's constitutional monarchy, a junior minister said on Sunday. The rebel assault came in the eastern part of the revolt-torn nation where the government has declared a state of emergency to battle the insurgents, who are seeking to create a one-party communist republic.

The country's junior Home Minister Devendra Raj Kandel said the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) guerrillas late on Saturday attacked a police post at Lalbandi, in Sarlahi district around 300 km east of the capital Kathmandu. Kandel said Maoist guerrillas also launched an overnight attack on government installations in Achham district in west Nepal but details from the remote area were still awaited.
"They (the rebels) have attacked (a rural) airport and district administration office in Achham at around midnight. The fighting is continuing. Details have not come so far," Kandel said. Bureau Report
