Bangkok, July 15: Korat Zoo has successfully bred two Thai Sarus cranes, a species that had become extinct in the wild, director general of the Thailand Zoological Park Organization said.
"Two cranes hatched last Friday, and another three are waiting to hatch. Such cranes have become extinct in the wild, but we are able to breed them in breeding farms," Director General Sophon Dumnui said.
Zoological Park Association (ZPA) would continue the breeding programme to ensure a large number of cranes were bred, Dumnui said, adding that the birds would eventually be released in the wild.
The crane breeding programme would also be presented before the ASEAN zoological association when it meets in December in Singapore.
Scientists working on this project of national importance would be duly rewarded, Dumnui said.
