Geneva, Nov 08: Israeli and Palestinian sponsors of a Middle East peace initiative will meet in Geneva on December 1, the Swiss Foreign Ministry has said. Earlier the figures who launched the plan, the so-called Geneva peace initiative, had announced they had received a letter of encouragement from US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

A foreign ministry spokesman yesterday said, "The two sides will publicly reiterate their commitment to the project" but gave no further details about the meeting.

The Geneva initiative is the work of Israeli Labour Party and Palestinian representatives and deals with all key points in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the thorny issues of the Jewish settlements and the borders of a future Palestinian state. Under the agreement reached by all sides involved in drafting the plan, the Palestinians will waive the right of return for some 3.8 million refugees, while sovereignty over Jerusalem will be shared and 97.5 per cent of the West Bank will be handed over to the Palestinians.
