London, Nov 16: As a boost to the Asian traders
dominating the corner shops across Britain, the British
government proposes to set up a retail academy to offer
business solutions to the trading community.
The aim of a retail academy is to deliver a range of
retail-specific business solutions and learning programmes
thereby encouraging business diversification, improving
business competitiveness and improving the survival rates of
new business start-ups.
The suggestion to set up such an academy was mooted by Kalpesh Solanki, managing editor of Asian Trader magazine at the Asian Trader Awards, considered as the 'Oscars of retailing' here.
"I accept the challenge. The suggestion to set up a retail academy is a positive one and I welcome the proposal," Charles Clarke, MP, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, said at the prize distributing ceremony held this weekend.
Ramesh Shingadia of Londis, in Sussex won the prestigious Asian Trader of the Year Award of 10,000 pounds.
The three-hour long ceremony attended by 950 guests including NRI businessmen S P Hinduja and G P Hinduja, chairman and president respectively of the Hinduja group.
Individual retailers in 13 categories were rewarded for skills such as entrepreneurial ability and commitment to customer care.
Kirpal Panesar of the Jet Sight at High Street, Swanley, Kent won the Asian Trader Excellence in Merchandising Award 2003. Vijay Patel of Londis, Lancashire, received the Asian Trader Young Entrepreneur award.
