Mumbai, Oct 15: The people at Applause Entertainment are sharpening their pixels. That’s because this AV Birla Group company has bagged a multi-million dollar contract from Warner Bros to provide the special effects in the third part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy — The Return of the King. Says Applause CEO Anshuman Swami, “This is a first. We are delighted at having bagged this contract as this means that we will be doing cutting-edge work.”
Going by previous budgets, the venture is going to beef up that bottomline. The second part of the trilogy had a budget of $139 million (it took in $945 million, making it the fifth largest grosser of all time) and spending on The Return of the King is going to be in the same region.
"The budget for special effects for this movie will constitute around 20-25 per cent of the entire budget of the film," says Swami, while refusing to reveal how much of the special effects his company will do.
Considering that Hollywood biggies like Sony Pictures did the FX for the previous flick, it’s a major grab.
Applause, privately owned by Kumarmanglam Birla, is the first Asian company to bag a contract of such complexity.
The movie, which has been shot extensively in New Zealand, will hit theatres in the US in December. Work on the project began in May after Applause made a presentation. At the presentation they were asked to do a complicated 21-layered shot. They breezed through the test.
Back in Bollywood, the action hasn’t stopped. Applause is planning a slew of projects in films, TV and events. Its next big venture is Black, the crossover Hindi movie with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actor Amitabh Bachchan.
