Chennai: For a second time within two weeks, the Tamil film industry will join hands to observe a day-long fast Tuesday against the reported genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. The first fast was observed March 19 here.
While the Tamil Nadu Film Directors Association (TANTIS) and Film Employees` Federation of South India (FEFSI) spearheaded the earlier fast, the "Nadigar Sangam" - also known as South Indian Film Artistes` Association (SIFAA) - will fast in support of Sri Lankan Tamils April 2.
"We received an overwhelming response for our token fast in March. However, everybody from the industry couldn`t participate because of tight schedules. This time, we are hopeful of a bigger turnout. Actors who couldn`t make it last time have postponed shooting to join the fast," a member of SIFAA told IANS.
"(Actor) Ajith sir has already postponed his shooting, while Kamal sir and Rajini sir are likely to join. We are happy with the response we have received since the token fast, but we hope for more," he added.
Does the presence of all actors make a difference?
"Last time, the fast was initiated by the directors` association. This time the artistes will take part too. If all big actors join the fast, the movement is sure to pick up momentum and will help in highlighting the issue more," he said.
The fast will take place at the "Nadigar Sangam" premises here.
"We have cancelled all shootings for the day and have also requested everybody shooting out of Chennai to return and participate in the fast," a SIFAA member added.
