Jammu, May 31: The army was determined to stop infiltration of armed militants across the Line of Control (LoC) by several measures including fencing of vulnerable areas along the LoC, a top officer said today. "Infiltration is still continuing... but we will wait and watch in the coming months about degree of its reduction," General Officier Commanding (GOC) of 16 Corps Lt. General T P Brar told reporters at Nagrota, 12 kms from here.
"We have taken some measures to stop the infiltration, but the borders cannot be sealed," he said, adding around 200 km of LoC will be fenced by trap-wire to make it difficult for the infiltrators to cross over to this side of the loc.
The engineers were already on the job and the entire work would be completed in 20 months period, he asserted.
Besides, a multi-tier system of deployment of troops would be adopted making it difficult for ultras to penetrate, he said, adding if someone manages to sneak then Rashtriya Rifles jawans would take care of him.
Brar said last week security forces killed about 14 infiltrators in the valley, four in Poonch and three in Nowshera area. However, there is no fool-proof method to stop infiltration as border at many places was porous, he added.
"We have also installed surveillance devices along the border to detect any infiltration bid and accordingly take measures to check them," he said.
He said barring some scattered incidents the militancy was generally confined to a few areas and the security forces have eliminated scores of militants.
However, he conceded that there were roughly 1100-1200 militants still operating in Jammu region.
