Apparently caught in a dilemma on dealing with the West Bengal situation, NDA on Saturday night left it to the Centre to take whatever steps it deems necessary to prevent destruction of democratic institutions in the state and asked the CPI(M)-led government to end violence. “The NDA requests the Union government to take whatever steps it deems necessary to prevent the destruction of democratic institutions in West Bengal,” a resolution unanimously adopted at the NDA coordination committee meeting in New Delhi said. While some of the NDA constituents like Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee have been demanding imposition of President's rule in the state or declaring some of the areas as ‘disturbed’, some other partners like TDP and DMK are totally opposed to the invocation of Article 356. Expressing anguish over the violence allegedly perpetrated by CPI(M) cadres in the state, the NDA felt that what was most disturbing was that the state administration including the law enforcement authorities down to the lowest administrative unit was a silent spectator.
