Ara (Bihar), Sept 08: About 1000 inmates of Bihar's Bhojpur divisional jail have gone on an indefinite hunger strike in support of their demands for proper medicare and sanitation, officials said today.
The jail officials said that the undertrials have refused to take food since last night to pressurise the jail administration to open a fresh kitchen as the existing one was unable to cook food for such a large number of inmates.
They also demanded action against the misbehaving jail staff, proper medicare as well as sanitation facilities in the jail premises.
A senior official said that the agitation has been masterminded by some influential prisoners to pressurise the jail authorities to prepare food of their choice.
He said that talks were being held with he agitating prisoners to end the protest fast.
Over 1000 prisoners are lodged in the Bhojpur jail currently against a capacity of 450 inmates.
