Fifty-six kgs of heroin worth Rs 55 crore in the international market was seized and 11 people, including five Sri Lankan nationals, arrested for drug trafficking in separate operations in and around the city in the past three days, Narcotics Control Bureau said on Sunday.
High quality heroin weighing five kgs was seized at the international airport this morning from a Sri Lanka born Canadian national, who was about to board a British Airways flight to Geneva after immigration clearance, NCB Regional Director Shankar Jiwal, told reporters.
Earlier, four persons including a Sri Lankan national were arrested from a city hotel on May 16 when they were delivering heroin worth Rs five crore for transportation to Sri Lanka through sea.
On Saturday forty-four kgs of the drug meant for Sri Lanka via Kanyakumari, was seized from a car near Maduranthakkam, Jiwal said.
Two Sri Lankan national, who had been trafficking drug between Tamil Nadu's south coast and Sri Lanka, were transporting the heroin along with their two country cousins and an Indian when the car was intercepted.
When asked to stop, they drove the vehicle in reverse only to hit a power post and were overpowered, he said adding that the five were arrested.
