Jammu and Kashmir cabinet has approved delegation of powers to newly elected panchayats in the state, a senior official said in Jammu on Friday.

State chief secretary Ashok Jaitly said the panchayats, which came into being through elections after 23 years, will supervise among other departments, primary schools, health sub-centres, anganwari and social welfare training centres, veterinary centres and seed distribution centres.

“The members of panchayats will be provided orientation course to familiarize them about the responsibilities and powers with regard to implementation of these programmes,” Jaitly said adding it would be completed within next three months.

“The allocation of resources to the panchayats shall be made effective from April 1, 2002,” he added
