Two weeks ahead of their opening 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan fixture in Sapporo against Saudi Arabia, Germany enjoyed a morale-boosting 6-2 victory over Austria in Saturday evening's final warm-up game.

Four days after suffering an embarrassing 1-0 reverse against Wales in Cardiff, Rudi Völler's Germany showed a dramatic improvement in form, as a capacity 22,500 crowd at the BayArena in Leverkusen saw the hosts in a committed and determined mood, dominating for long periods against Hans Krankl's admittedly weak Austrian side. Germany's emphatic victory was only marred by another injury to Sebastian Deisler, who left the field on a stretcher after only 19 minutes.

Völler made only two changes to the team which had started against Wales, bringing in Marco Bode for Jörg Heinrich, and preferring Carsten Jancker to Oliver Bierhoff up front. The 42 year-old head coach was still without his Bayer Leverkusen contingent, awarded the evening off after their exertions in the Champions League final, and defender Marko Rehmer, whose comeback from injury was further delayed by a knock to his shoulder.
