New Delhi, March 30: '.Info', a generic top level
domain name for internet address, has become popular in India
with the country being placed at third position in Asia for
Afilias, a global provider of internet domain name
registry services, has said that the '.Info' generic top-level
domain has reached over 4 million domain names under
management, five years after it was launched.
Asia contributes over 2,00,000 registrations for the
"Afilias has built the most successful brand of the new
top-level domains in .Info and has provided an attractive and
popular alternative to .Com and other generic domain names",
said Roland Laplante, vice president and chief marketing
officer of Afilias.
While in India, government is pushing for a country-code
web address like .In, other registrations like .Com, .Net and
.Org are also popular among the users.
North America is the top market for .Info domain sales
(51 per cent) while Europe takes the second place (38 per
cent). The US is the top country for .Info registrations (48
per cent) followed by Germany (11 per cent).
.Info is now the sixth largest domain on the internet.
Seventy-four per cent of .Info registrations are being
used on the web for dedicated sites, businesses, blogs. It
currently contains over two million active sites.
