Srinagar, Aug 25: Contrary to popular belief that
majority of the population of Jammu and Kashmir lives in
Kashmir Valley, the number of voters registered with the
election commission as on January 1 in Jammu region exceeded
that in the Valley by nearly 350,000.
Of the total electorate of 5,612,149 in the state, Jammu region accounted for 2,892,290 while the valley had 2,546,913 voters. The other 172,946 voters belong to the cold desert of Ladakh region, official statistics provided by the election
Jammu district has the highest number of voters
(1,093,203) followed by Srinagar (588,317) while Kargil has
the least (86,231) among the 14 districts of the state.
Constituency wise, Jammu west has the most number of voters
(151,477) while Nobra in Leh district has the least (12,244).
Number of eligible voters in other districts was 547,850
in Baramulla, 260,454 in Kupwara, 288,309 in Budgam, 301,333
in Pulwama, 560,650 in Anantnag, 86,715 in Leh, 350,080 in
Rajouri, 253,583 in Poonch, 388,519 in Doda, 363,928 in Kathua
and 442,977 in Udhampur.
EC sources said applications for enrollment into the
electoral rolls were still pouring in.
Four-phased polls will be held in Jammu and Kashmir over
the next two months.
