Victoria, Aug 20: American Aaron Peirsol set a world record in the 200 meters backstroke at the Pan Pacific Championships on Saturday while the U.S. men's team also set a world mark in the 4x100 free relay.
Peirsol outpaced compatriot Michael Phelps to win in a time of 1:54.44. Phelps clocked 1:56.81 and Tomomi Morita of Japan picked up the bronze in 1:58.53.
"It never gets old," said Peirsol. "I felt great the whole way and I'm really happy with it."
The U.S. men set a world record of 3:12.46 in the 4x100 freestyle relay, eclipsing South Africa's previous record of 3:13.17 set in 2004.
