Chandigarh, June 16: Renowned Punjabi classical and
folk singer Surinder Kaur died yesterday in the US following
Kaur, 77, had regaled fans with her melodious voice for
over six decades.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has expressed grief
over the death of the Padma Shree awardee, who had been ailing
for some time in New Jersey.
With her death, Punjabi culture has been deprived of an
eminent singer, Singh said.
Born in Lahore in 1929, Kaur started her singing career
at the young age of 14 by defying her parents` diktat that it
wasn`t appropriate for Sikh girls to sing.
