The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday accused the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh of engineering attacks on the its candidates with the help of police to terrorise them.
Condemning what he termed as a murderous attack on party Lok Sabha member Akhilesh Yadav, SP state president Ram Saran Das alleged that the police remained a mute spectator when BJP supporters opened fire and hurled bricks at an election rally attended by Akhilesh Yadav at Bharthana in Etawah district on Sunday.
“Chief Minister Rajnath Singh is openly misusing the official machinery to terrorise SP candidtaes and people. Free and fair elections are not possible under such circumstances,” he alleged, adding, “SP workers would not tolerate such, provocations by the BJP.”
Charging the ministers with flouting the election commission's directives by using official vehicles for campaigning, Das said, “SP would draw the EC's attention towards such blatant misuse of official machinery.”
He urged the EC to allow people to excercise their franchise on the basis on the voters list and not to insist on photo identity cards.
