: In a fresh spurt of violence, three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed and four others seriously injured when underground Manipur People's Army (MPA) ambushed a BSF patrol party at Kwakta in Bishenpur district on Sunday night, official sources said.
They said about 30 well-armed MPA members opened fire at a 10-member BSF foot patrol party at kwakta, about 50 km south-east of in Imphal.
Three BSF personnel were killed, while four others sustained bullet wounds, they said.
The BSF personnel returned the fire, but casualties, if any, on MPA, armed wing of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), was not known.
Sources said the insurgents also took away some arms, including a self-loading rifle.
Heavy reinforcements, including police personnel from nearby Moirang police station, were rushed to the spot and a combing operation was launched. However, no arrest was made, they said.
Meanwhile, a caller who identified himself as a UNLF spokesman said the ambush was carried out by the MPA cadres as a part of their armed propaganda for what he termed 'an independent Manipur'.
He claimed that all the MPA cadres who took part in the ambush had returned to their camps.
