New Delhi, June 18: Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India (TRAI) has informed the fixed line operators that volume
discounts given to customers in basic services would be
allowed only on billed amount of at least Rs 500, excluding
monthly rentals.

"Admissibility of tariff packages with volume discounts
has been under consideration of TRAI. The authority's decision
on discounts given to customers by operators includes discounts that will be allowed only on billed amount of Rs 500 and above excluding monthly rentals," TRAI said in a recent
letter to all basic service providers.

In addition, the regulator has said all schemes of volume
discounts must be available to consumers within the entire
services area, that is, the entire telecom circle.

It said several tariff packages offering volume discounts
reported to TRAI during the period of review were directed to
be kept in abeyance pending the decision of the authority, and
added, "if any service provider's plan to offer discounts as
proposed earlier still stands, they should submit the plan to
TRAI once again so that the authority's decision in respect of
their request may be conveyed."

TRAI has also asked the operators to report any discount
scheme currently existing and not conforming to the
requirements, for review by TRAI.
