New Delhi: India added 1,20,529 new COVID-19 and 3,380 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry on Saturday (June 5, 2021). This was India's lowest rise in daily new cases in almost two months.

The country which went through a raging second wave of coronavirus in April and May recorded less than 2 lakh daily new cases for the ninth consecutive day.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that India's weekly positivity rate is currently at 6.89% while the daily positivity rate stands at 5.78%. "It has remained less than 10% for 12 consecutive days now," it said.


With this, the total number of cases in the country increased to 2,86,94,879, while the death toll mounted to 3,44,082. India now has 15,55,248 active cases.


On the other hand, nearly 2 lakh people were discharged between Friday and Saturday morning. The country has so far seen 2,67,95,549 people recovering from the virus.

India has also administered over 22.78 crore coronavirus vaccines. 


Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of India's COVID-19 vaccination drive and directed officials to bring down vaccine wastage.



The Prime Minister stated that the coronavirus vaccine wastage numbers are still on the higher side in the country and that steps need to be taken to bring them down.

The meeting was attended by several Union Ministers including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nirmala Sitharaman.
