MP govt’s move to levy cess on petrol, diesel gets approval

The move of the Madhya Pradesh government to impose cess on petrol and diesel has been given a go-ahead by Governor OP Kohli.

According to sources, a notification in this regard is likely to be issued on Wednesday. And the prices of petrol and diesel would be revised on Thursday.

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has levied cess on fuel through ordinance route.

With this move, petrol and diesel prices are likely to go up by 50 paise per litre.

Notably, the Chouhan government had reduced VAT on petrol and diesel in October 2017, leading to a fall in prices.

The move to levy cess has come as a bid by the government to gather funds for road construction and repair across the state. The move has, however, not gone down well with many.

While some people have opposed the move, petrol pump owners have warned that the move might lead to rise in prices of essential commodities.
