Mumbai: Due to poor performance in the BMC polls, Mumbai Regional Congress Committee President Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday offered to resign from his post.
A day before the results of the civic body election, he sent the resignation letter to the party leadership in Delhi.
Nirupam, who is credited with creating a generational split within the party, further said that he will not stop working for the Congress.
“I have taken full responsibility as the chairman and I have offered my resignation. I am loyal to the party and I will continue working for it,” said he.
Congress leader Bhai Jagtap, whose name could be considered for the post, said that no official decision has been taken by the party on the resignation offered by Nirupam as yet.
The Congress managed to secure only 31 seats out of a total of 227, while the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 84 and 82 seats respectively.
