'No increase of Assembly seats in Andhra, Telangana till 2026'

New Delhi: The number of Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will not be increased till 2026, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Chaudhary, while replying to a written question, said as per Section 26 of the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act 2014, the number of seats in the Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is likely to be increased from 175 and 119 to 225 and 153 respectively subject to the provisions of the Constitution.

"As per Article 170 of the Constitution, delimitation of the constituencies can be possible only when the relevant population figures of the first census taken after the year 2026 have been published," he said.

Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated and Telangana came into existence on June 2, 2014 as a new 29th state of India with Hayderabad as its capital.
