Hyderabad: A safe and organised public transport system would help in tackling the problem of traffic congestion, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar said here on Saturday.
"Traffic congestion has become a menace. Eighty-eight per cent of vehicles plying on city roads are four- and two- wheelers, which is nothing but a failure of public transport," the Speaker said.
Manohar inaugurated a conference on `Sustainable Solutions to Tackle Congestion for Better Livable City` here, organised by Institute of Town Planners India (ITPI).
"Unless we have safe, organised and environment-friendly public transport, the traffic congestion will make our life difficult," Manohar said.
The planned metro in Hyderabad would be a boon but it was not the only solution, he said, and pointed out that auto-rickshaws were also among the best transport facilities and there was a need to make them more organised.
