BJP protests against police inaction

BJP took out a protest rally on Saturday against alleged police inaction in the arrest of those involved in the killing of a party worker during the recent panchayat polls in the state.

The protestors took out a procession with banners and posters and shouting slogans against alleged police inaction staged a demonstration before the deputy commissioner`s office.

They also submitted a memorandum addressed to Governor J B Patnaik through the Cachar Deputy Commissioner, Harendra Kumar Dev Mahanta.

BJP worker Swapan Paul was allegedly killed by workers of another party at Dholai on February 12 when he put up a resistance against rigging during the panchayat polls.

Another protest rally was brought out by several organisations in Lakhipur sub division of Cachar District demanding judicial inquiry into the killing of poll official Anwar Hussain Mazumder.

Mazumdar, a resident of Badripar under Lakhipur constituency, was killed in February 16 midnight when he was returning after discharging his duty as a counting supervisor for the panchayat polls.

The protestors assembled before the office of the sub-divisional officer (civil) and submitted a memorandum to the Cachar deputy commissioner through SDO (civil) in support of their demands.

A copy of the memorandum was also sent to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Excise and Sports Minister Ajit Singh.

Organisations like Assam United Manipuri Sangstha, All Assam Manipuri Muslim Students? Association, All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Coordination Committee pressed for adequate compensation to the bereaved family.
