Congress suspends two party general secretaries in Assam

Ruling Congress has slapped a six-year suspension on two party general secretaries in Morigaon district for allegedly attacking a police team which had gone to arrest a Bangladeshi national.

Guwahati/Morigaon: Ruling Congress has slapped a six-year suspension on two party general secretaries in Morigaon district for allegedly attacking a police team which had gone to arrest a Bangladeshi national.

"We have suspended Habibur Rahman and Siddique Ahmed -- the two general secretaries of Morigaon district Congress -- for six years.

"We have also requested police to arrest them and strict action should follow," Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Anjan Dutta told PTI.

Terming the incident "unfortunate", he said the duo have been trying to join an opposition party and their alleged act was aimed at "maligning" the Congress.

Police officials in Morigaon said the Congress duo are absconding at present.

Meanwhile, two brothers of Rahman were arrested for their involvement in the attack.

On Monday, a police party led by a sub-inspector went to the Milanpur area of Morigaon town to arrest Rustam Ali, who was declared to be an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant by a Foreigners Tribunal.

However, the team was attacked by locals, who were led allegedly by Rahman and Ahmed, and Ali took advantage of the melee to escape from his house, a police official said.

An FIR has been filed against the two Congress leaders and an operation launched to nab those involved in the attack, the official added.
