Sonitpur: Floods in Assam, following heavy rains for the past few days, have displaced at least 80,000 people in eight districts of the state.
About 200 villages have been affected by the swirling waters in Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and other districts.
The worst affected districts are Lakhimpur and Sonitpur where more than 50,000 people have been rendered homeless.
The floods have submerged at least 4,000 hectares of land. In Sonitpur, villagers could be seen wading through flood waters by using bamboo sticks.
Flood waters have entered their houses forcing many to take shelter in government camps.
Angry villagers in Sonitpur claimed they have not received any aid from the government.
"The government is not concerned about us. There has not been any development. Therefore, we consider this government to be dead and we have nothing to do with it," said a villager, Manas Hajarika.
The state government has set up three relief camps in Tinsukia district where around 200 villagers have taken shelter.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has put the state on high alert.
